I was overjoyed for Doyin, who was announced as winner of the award for Best Overall Paper…
The event enables final year undergraduate students on BA degrees in advertising, marketing communications and public relations, the opportunity to present their work at an academic conference where it is peer-reviewed, thus benefiting from the learning experience of communicating their research both to academics from the faculty and professionals from industry.
At Bournemouth University final year undergraduates have the option to undertake an 8000-word dissertation and present a research paper at the conference, as an alternative to the traditional 10,000-word dissertation.
I supervised nine undergraduate dissertation students this year and three of them elected to present at the conference. All worked very hard indeed and had thought-provoking presentations.
I was still suffering from jet lag, having just returned from an international media conference in Dubai at 1am on 20th May and was promptly up six hours later to attend the student conference with responsibility for first and second marking for eight of the presentations.
It was a proud moment for me as all three students delivered their presentations with passion and enthusiasm. They are all winners in my eyes for working to the best of their abilities.
At the end of the conference when award winners were announced, while I was proud of all three students, I was overjoyed for Doyin, who was announced as winner of the award for Best Overall Paper.
In addition to the exposure that this award brings, she also receives £100 worth of Amazon vouchers. Her paper examines whether the sexual objectification of self among Black female hip hop artists is perceived by young Black women as being empowering or misogynistic.
She delivered her presentation in the main lecture theatre in the Executive Business Centre in the presence of the Vice Chancellor and was articulate, polished and professional, responding well to questions with strong arguments.
So I am writing this post to express my warmest congratulations to Doyin on her richly-deserved award. Hopefully her success will inspire some of the students who read this blog!
Congratulations to Doyin – and she's a Nigerian. This is a great feeling!
