This research explores whether 1Black postgraduate research students (PGRs) experience specific challenges in gaining a sense of belonging within higher education institutions (HEIs) . The study draws on critical race theory as a lens to examine how dominant, White, Eurocentric, gendered norms persist within institutional cultures, epistemologies and academic practice. Findings are based on in-depth interviews with 10 1Black PGRs at HEIs across the UK and will be used to develop strategies that enhance sense of belonging within the research environment.
